Pensioner Writes A Strongly Worded Letter To The Government Refusing To Pay Property Tax

In a strongly worded letter to the Irish government, a 73-year-old man has said in no uncertain terms that he will refuse to pay the property tax. The letter, which is dated yesterday, states how this man has paid his dues and been loyal to this country and has “fuck all else to give or lose”.

He says that the politicians and bankers of this country have been driven by greed and are “overbearing bastards”. He is not the one, he says, who caused this financial crisis and he will not be one to suffer for it.

This man left school at 14 years of age and has worked for the next 60 years of his life. He, like many other pensioners, is on his knees, frightened and pissed off. I don’t blame them. At 23, I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum, with my whole life ahead to work, pay tax and die. That seems grim but Ireland has few prospects for people like me who have just left college and want to start making a go of it. I want to pay my taxes, I want to stay in Ireland, I have little interest in jetting off to the other side of the world when my family are right here, thank you very much, but what choice do I have?

Of course, I am one of the lucky few who landed a dream job right out of college, which gives me some glimmer of hope for the future. But when I look at the struggle the generation before me went through, the house owners with cars, children and an unnerving, never ending, mountain of bills it makes my breath stop for just a second. How can anyone live like this? From day to day, week to week, frightened of what else their government will impose on them and too meek to speak up and make a stand.

This letter brought a tear to my eye and hope to my heart. It is a reminder of the power of the Irish people: we have done it before we can do it again. What are we afraid of? The big men in the shiny suits? They should be afraid of us! We have the power and we cannot take any more. I for one am sick of seeing worry lines creased across the faces of my loved ones because they don’t know how they will pay their next bill or worse, pay for some food.

Enough is enough. I applaud the man who wrote this letter. Do you agree?
