With the funeral of the “Iron Lady” tomorrow we thought it appropriate to discover who are the top five most powerful women in the world at the moment. Not surprisingly, Thatcher herself was nowhere to be found – her time in power is long over, however the influence she had on women in politics will never be forgotten although, in her own words she “owes nothing to women’s lib”.

Here are the top fice most powerful women in the world, not one of them comes as a surprise and you have to be thankful not to see Lady Gaga in there:

1. Angela Merkel. A German politician who has been Chancellor of Germany since 2005 and leader of the Christian Democratic Union since 2000. She is the first female to ever hold either of these positions. She is a prominent figure in Europe.

2. Hillary Clinton. She is an American politician who served under President Obama as the 67th secretary of state. She was previously a United States Senator for New York. Her husband is Bill Clinton, ex President of the United States and she is widely expected to make a 2016 White House run, having lost the Democrat nomination to President Obama in 2008.

3. Dilma Rousseff. Became the first female President of Brazil, she has held this role since 2011.

4. Melinda Gates. She is the wife of Bill Gates. An American business woman, she worked at Microsoft and is now the co-chair or the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

5. Jill Abramson. In the 160 year history of the New York Times, Jill Abramson became the first female executive editor. Knowledge is power as they say and this puts her at number 5 on our list.
