A Cuppa With: Mental Health in Music - Episode three: Beating Imposter Syndrome
Episode Three of the Mental Health in Music series covered “Beating Imposter Syndrome” - which is something which impacts all creatives - and most people to be fair! Imposter Syndrome is that nagging feeling that nothing you’ve created is good enough and you will be "found out" eventually! Sound familiar? Well, in this episode I talk to Emma Langford who is a prime example of someone who has worked their way to the top - from the ground up. Emma has openly talked about her own insecurities, while continuing to achieve her dreams, in spite of self-doubts! I'm also joined by Mental Health and Mindfulness expert, and author, Padraig O'Morain - who talks about the familiarity we all have with imposter syndrome and how to overcome 'the fear'. This episode features Danny G & the Major 7ths, Enda Gallery, Tolü Makay, and Louize Carroll I loved speaking with Tolü! As someone who has a very strong presence, she stepped away from corporations and has worked tirelessly to be true to who she is. A true inspiration with the most magical voice!! I also chat with the brilliant Louize Carroll, Chartered Psycologist - who also just so happens to be extra qualified to discuss musicians and mental health - as she's also @theblizzardsie Bass player! Louize brings expertise from both sides of her personality and has a special interest in working with people in creative industries, so was the perfect choice for this episode.
A Cuppa With: Mental Health in Music - Episode Five: Knowing Your Worth
A Cuppa With: Mental Health in Music - Episode FIVE - all about Knowing Your Worth. A Cuppa With: Mental Health in Music - Episode Six: Maintaining Our Wellbeing Passed the Pandemic
Episode SIX - is all about 'Ongoing Wellness Passed the Pandemic'. In this final episode - we will look at how to support your own, and others mental health, while working in the often uncertain creative industry. I'm joined by: Aoife Ruth; a researcher, educator and psychotherapist, with special expertise in Politics and Sociology and Integrative Psychotherapy. Aoife is passionate about working with musicians to develop personally and professionally. We talk about the positive response of musicians coming together in a unified voice in challenging unhelpful narratives around the arts. Aoife also discusses the negative stories we tell ourselves and how we can check in to adapt the destructive bullying we do in our own minds. I'm also joined by Niall Breslin, known to most as 'Bressie': the singer, guitarist and songwriter with The Blizzards… a leading figure in Mindfulness and Co-Founder of the Mental Health Charity A Lust for Life. We talk about changing the perception of music and the arts as a career. Niall also speaks about how important it is for musicians to keep their authenticity and their rawness. Both guests highlight the amazing work being done by Minding Creative Minds and both speak about how 'Victor Frankl's - 'Man's Search for Meaning' is one of the most important books ever written. We also hear from Cara Kursh and Jim O'Donoghue Martin - 'Video Blue' on how they look after their mental health.

One year on and we met again, with so much more to discuss. 2016 has been quite a year for Mongrel State who released their debut album “Mestizo” at the beginning of the year. The year has seen them appear on the Ray D’arcy show and at numerous festivals across the country.
A band talented in so many ways, they all bring incredible drive and force to their art; all of them so dedicated to the cause. If you get the opportunity to see them live, take it. If you don’t get the opportunity well make it happen, you won’t regret it.

]]>Since the release of their self-titled album, King Kong Company have proved they have nothing to prove. Having garnered a solid reputation on the live circuit over the past twenty years, they finally released an album into the ether.
Their album received undisputed critical acclaim, with everyone from Lofty in Ceol Caint to Nialler9, The Last Mixed Tape and Hot Press praising it as a resounding success. It proved that when things are done right, they are worth waiting for and if we never hear another album from KKC, this released proved to be timeless perfection.
King Kong Company are an act that won’t leave your mindset once you see them. With an eclectic show including dancing monkeys, a tracky wearing cardboard box head dancer and the most powerful performance you can imagine, it’s nothing if not memorable.
If you don’t know who they are, you’re missing out. If you think you don’t like them it’s just because you’ve never seen them. If you’re wondering what to do tomorrow night, Friday, September 30, get down to the Academy on Abbey Street to see Cut Once and King Kong Company blow you mind.

Having gone from a full band to a duo has not altered their sound, and the addition of Suzette Das has proved fruitful for the act.
With their synth alt-pop sound, they have recently started garnishing recognition for their quality music. In fact, having released two singles and two cover videos in six months, it’s safe to say they’re rising to new heights and becoming well-known beyond their already established name within the Irish music scene.
Debo and I met for a cuppa, discussing all things Hvmmingbyrd, how far they’ve come, what’s next and how people need to stop treating girl musicians as a novelty…it’s 2016 for feck sake!!!

Always open to helping others, with a big heart and a vision of greater things for everyone, Luke is a rare gem.
Having played almost 300 gigs in 2015, followed by his debut single release in 2016, he’s growing from strength to strength, learning every leg of the way.
He recently recored a live EP, which marks another milestone in his journey. Also, having been booked for YouBloom LA, it won’t be long before his story is an international one.

Reminiscent of a young Alex Turner in The Last Shadow Puppets style, Sean plays his sophisticated style of indie-rock with a classic edge.
Sean has come to the fore over recent weeks as his stunning music highlighting depression went viral. Beginning with Everest High, which to date has over 20,000 views, Sean released a series of videos capturing the attention and the hearts of a massive new fan base.
Following this, he played a support slot to Brave Giant over two nights in Whelans. He will also play Longford Summer Festival this weekend, Ceol Caint’s gig Longford Jam for Oxjam on July 2 and Liquor Rooms on July 10.
I met him for A Cuppa With, we spoke about going solo, how nerve wracking it is being yourself, and the inspiration behind songs about abandoned pubs and mystery women. Check it out. Sean Rooney will also feature on Rachel’s 8radio “A Cuppa with Rachel Masterson” show next week.

Always supporting local Irish music, and considering we all hail from lovely Longford, I was keen to have the lads in for a cuppa with.
They’re set to bring out their debut EP featuring original music such as ‘Lordy Lordy’ (below), and are planning on hitting Whelan’s, The Workman’s Club, Indiependence and Hype Festival over the coming months.
For a band who are yet to release and EP, these guys are making waves, already with a huge following and decent exposure behind them.

]]>Hailed as one of the greatest acts of their genre both home and abroad, Stephen Young and The Union are a classic example of how pure talent, mixed with hard work are a recipe for success.
Their debut album “Wilderness Machine” received extensive airplay, and saw the band playing extensively nationwide on the Irish festival scene. Now with their second album “Eagle Fort Rumble” due for release, Stephen has already completed an American tour.
Now back on home soil, the five-piece are about to embark on an Irish tour, beginning with a gig in Sligo tomorrow (November 20) and the album launch party in The Grand Social on November 27.
Four and a half years since their debut launch, this highly anticipated album is sure to see further success for the group.
On a blustery Tuesday evening, I joined Stephen Young and Johnny Byrne from Stephen Young and the Union on a road trip across Dublin. We reached our destination, and enjoyed a nice cuppa (as you can see) and donuts as we chatted about the album making process, breaking toes and the upcoming album launch party. ]]>Every now and again, someone comes along out of the blue to completely surprise me with their multitude and mix of talents. In this case, it’s Andrew Carroll.
I was introduced to Andrew awhile back by my good friend Hazel Lake, and I must admit I didn’t know what to expect. We became friends over Facebook and he showed me his photography page, which was my first insight into how talented he is.
The second insight happened at a fundraiser Funzo put on for his girlfriend a few weeks ago, where Andrew stood on stage alone and sang Frank Sinatra “My Way”; the whole crowd went crazy singing along. His voice blew me away.
What I like most about Andrew is his humble nature and how quick he is to compliment the talents of everyone else. A true gent. Over the years, Andrew has met a lot of musicians and this reflects a lot in this EP.
Andrew worked with Aisling Jarvis, who produced/engineered/mixed & mastered the EP. She’s a sound engineer who he has been playing bass and singing with her for nearly two years. Her mother is Moya Brennan, big musical family heritage there! She doesn’t play any instruments on the EP, but her and her girlfriend Lauren join him for the intro of “I Got The Good Lord”.
Micheál Quinn from Meltybrains? plays on the first four tracks of the EP, who Andrew met while in NUI Maynooth. Andrew claims that he is one of the best drummers out there and that’s why he had to have him play on the EP.
Euan Murphy, I Am The Only, sings lead vocals on “I’m Gonna Love Her”. Aisling produced/engineered/mixed & mastered his album too. Finally Funzo sings backing vocals on “Crazy Little Girl” and “I’m Gonna Love Her”.
This EP is really a fantastic production, and will be free for you all to download very soon. Listen to “A Cuppa With Andrew Carroll” below.

Aine and her guitarist Sam Geraghty joined me recently for a cuppa with. Considering Aine’s mad hatter theme, this tea party fitted in just perfectly. We Were Giants are a four piece band from Dublin who have been making major waves on the music scene in Ireland and abroad. Made up of brothers Colm, Ste and close friends Danny and Jay, We Were Giants have what has been described as a ‘sky-scraping indie rock band with an anthemic touch’.
I met with the two brothers in their cool studio in Inchicore for a cuppa with We Were Giants. Mongrel State are a four piece band based in Dublin, made up of members with international origin (and one Sligo lad); all of whom claim they are proud to now be Irish musicians.
Their southern folk-rock tones are complimented with a Latin American twang, and what they describe as “honkytonk pianos & wide harmonies sitting side-by-side with New Orleans grooves”.
I was delighted they invited me round to hang out. During our “a cuppa with” we discussed their upcoming album, how they all met, and how the Spanish and Italian members of the band felt that Ireland offers more possibility to follow your dreams.

Curating gigs across the Capital, and all across the country, managing artists and in general promoting Irish music in any way he can, the Co-Present has become a way for musicians to let their voices be heard.
