Ireland’s alt-country stars were out in force at the first ever Dublin City Rounders alt country song contest final. The contest took place in IMRO HQ on October 13, featuring a spectacular assortment of artists and friends.

Organised by brothers Rohan and Al Healy, the evening was to announce the winners of the contest and a celebration of the talent in the genre. The Dublin City Rounders, played some songs from their upcoming new album “It used to be about the money.”

Joey Lee Lawlor took first place with his song “Son of Lucifer”. He was awarded €300 and a beautiful handcrafted sculpture by artists Deirdre Griffen and George Moor. His sister was there to collect his prize as Joey was in the labor ward awaiting the birth of his seventh child.

Second place was awarded to Vagabonds and Thieves for their song “Devil’s Beat”. This was presented by Mike Gleenson from DownDa Road Productions and consisted of €100, a professional live music video and a slot at the Short Grass Sessions. Third place was taken by the ever talented Elga Fox, for her song “Gathering Moss”. Elga’s award was presented by John Shevlin of Shevlin Millinery and she received custom western head gear.

DJ Hazey Lake did sound and helped ensure the night went smoothly. Everyone was kept hydrated by O’Hara’s craft beer.

This is hopefully the beginning of what will be an annual event showcasing Ireland’s finest alt-country musicians.
