BLINDBOY BOATCLUB DISCUSSES MODERN CULTURE

Blindboy Boatclub has become somewhat of an unintentional political spokesperson for the rather lost generation of youths. He speaks to the masses in a way that only a man with a plastic bag over his head can. He once described us as a generation who are “either jumping on planes or jumping in rivers” and even criticised the fact it’s taken a man with a plastic bag for a face to speak out. He is the perfect person to lead a discussion on current society in “What the f*$k is culture anyway?”
Joined by a panel, they discussed various visually striking slides, what they might mean and how they relate to the culture of today. They explored how ideologies are created and challenged, and what leads people to follow a certain concept. Interestingly they pointed out how with social media we just surround ourselves and follow those who have the same ideas as us, eliminating any conflicting ideas or argument. They said the casualty of social media is a rational and respectful debate and rather than exclude those who think differently to us, even if it’s wrong, invite them in and get involved in a healthy discussion.
The notion of culture is knowing more than the person next to you through arts, theatre and education but this panel instead encouraged us to laugh at the idea of culture as it’s relative to each person. They finished by saying they still don’t know what the hell culture is. We were not enlightened but at least we did experience a healthy discussion!
